Curiosity First

featuring Diane DiCarlo

Founder of Curiosity Consulting

In this episode of Brand Story, our president, Steve Gilman, is joined by Diane DiCarlo, Founder of Curiosity Consulting, for a conversation about why the best marketing starts with listening.

The best marketing starts with listening.

In this episode, Diane DiCarlo reflects on her transition from in-house healthcare marketing leadership to launching her own consulting practice. Along the way, she discovered that many organizations already have the answers they’re looking for—they just haven’t taken the time to uncover them.

The conversation explores why so many marketing challenges are actually operational challenges, how customer research can reveal opportunities hiding in plain sight, and why organizations often know less about their audiences than they think they do. Diane shares examples from healthcare and beyond, illustrating how asking better questions can lead to better decisions, stronger positioning, and more meaningful customer experiences.

At its heart, this conversation is about curiosity. Diane argues that the answers organizations need are often already there—they just have to be willing to listen for them.

Quickfire Q&A

What’s a mistake you see marketers make over and over again?

Diane: We either talk about marketing as building awareness only or driving volume, but we’re missing the middle piece. Understanding your audience so well that you’ve got this predictive empathy where you understand the moments when they may not have even formed the question yet.

What would you call this chapter of your life?

Diane: Free birding. My children are both off in college, I’m doing work that I love, and I’m getting to do the things I want to do. It’s not empty nesting—I’m not mourning anything. I’m just having fun.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Diane: I would just give myself a little more grace for not having the five-year plan. Have a direction, but be willing to kind of flow with it.
