Authentic Storytelling

featuring Toby Myles

Strategic Copywriter

Toby Myles, Strategic Copywriter, shares her thoughts on storytelling and building genuine connections with our president, Steve Gilman

Toby Myles knows the power of a good story, and she’s built her business on helping others tell theirs. As the founder of Toby Myles Copywriting and the host of Her Origin Story podcast, Toby prioritizes connection over conversion and believes in running a “life-first” business—one focused on flexibility, family, and freedom.

In this episode, Toby shares how her 15-year career in corporate marketing led to an unexpected turning point, and how personal challenges pushed her to create a business that works for her life, not the other way around. She talks about why storytelling is the most human (and effective) marketing tool we have, how to spot stories hiding in plain sight, and why marketers should be collecting them like currency.

From her Spoonful of Comfort email marketing story to her Core 8 Story Hub framework, Toby offers insight on building genuine connections, creating empathetic campaigns, and making space for the moments that matter most. Whether you’re a marketer, entrepreneur, or just someone who loves a good story, this conversation will leave you inspired to make storytelling a core part of your brand.

Quickfire Q&A

Can you talk about your life-first business philosophy? Where did that come from?

Toby: One of my favorite things to do is just be with my family, and we don’t have an endless amount of time where we’re also healthy to enjoy things. So, having a business where I can work from anywhere, work differently? My number one priority is to soak in as much of the people in my life that I love.

How did you fall in love with storytelling?

Toby: I come from a long line of storytellers. My grandfather was the master of storytelling. So at a young age, I learned connection through stories because the people closest to me love telling stories.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Toby: It’s okay to be different. I spent a lot of time not fitting in, feeling like there was something wrong with me. I realize now that it’s actually better to just be who I am. And I know I’m probably not for everyone, but if we vibe and you like me, that’s great. If not, that’s cool too.
